Pixel Voltaic

Pixel Voltaic is a Spin-off company from UPorto created in 2018 for producing energy related technologies. The company ́s mission is to promote and enable a quick transition of innovative technologies into the market. Those technologies include photovoltaic systems and hydrogen production, namely DSCs/perovskite solar cells and methane decomposition reactors, respectively. Pixel Voltaic is engaged in bringing these technologies to the commercial level due to its social, economic and strategic value.

 

LaserBox

The LaserBox enables low-temperature glass encapsulation of perovskite solar cells and dye sensitized solar cells in a controlled atmosphere.

 

Methane decomposition

The world needs a disruptive technology to very quickly decarbonize the energy; the success will heavily depend on its social acceptance, sustainability and fast/easy implementation. Pixel Voltaic believes to posess such technology: a new chemical reactor that produces COx-free hydrogen from methane in a cost-effective process. This approach will be implemented swiftly, taking advantage of the present natural gas infrastructure. Low temperature methane decomposition is a 100 % selective reaction – CH4 → C (s) + 2 H2. Using methane from biogas allows actively to remove CO2 from the atmosphere (negative carbon balance).

112CO2

The aim of the project 112CO2 - Low temperature catalytic methane decomposition for COx-free hydrogen production, is to develop a technology that allows production of energy without emission of greenhouse gases/pollutants. Through the decomposition of methane (from biomethane, natural gas or synthetic methane) into carbon and hydrogen, this technology intends to be efficient, stable and inexpensive, with no emissions of any other by-products. The hydrogen produced can be used in fuel cells to produce electricity, in the chemical and petrochemical industry, to supply hydrogen to city blocks, or to be used as fuel in ships, trains, buses and trucks, for example.
The project consortium is led by FEUP/LEPABE team. The other partners of the project are Faculdade de Letras da U.Porto (FLUP), Agência Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Spain, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), Germany, and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. The industry partners are Quantis (Switzerland), Paul Wurth (Luxembourg) and Pixel Voltaic (Portugal).
